Matthew 6:21 tells us, “for where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” I protect time like Frodo protects the Ring, so I should be able to look at where the bulk of my time is spent to see what is most important to me.
Yet when I look at my life, much of my time was spent working. Work isn’t necessarily where we find our hearts, so what did Jesus even mean?
Even though I have not loved every hour spent at the jobs I have had, in every job, I could find something beautiful that connected to the heart of who I am.
Maybe that’s what Jesus meant. Work is already valuable. Maybe we need to allow ourselves to see that value to find our hearts.
If you, like me, have ever wondered about work and its inherent dignity, may I suggest you buy the latest issue of Common Horizon magazine? My very first paid published piece is inside and I can guarantee that you will love reading what I wrote as well as the gifts the other creators brought to this issue.
