a holy man

The glorification of Pope Benedict XVI after his death has me feeling conflicted.

I do not doubt he is a holy man. His dedication to recording the teachings of the Church is to be admired.

But also, his view and treatment of the LGBTQ community caused chaos and deep division in the Church. In creating a book of rules, he laid hard lines for a people who are still uncovering the fullness of truth.

And yet, his decision to step down as Pope, relinquishing the immense power that comes with guiding a worldwide Church, was a great act of strength.

It is no secret that I prefer Pope Francis’s leadership style. I’m an all-are-truly-in type of Catholic. Why else would Jesus come if not to guide every single one of God’s children towards eternal life?

I suppose Pope Benedict is just like the rest of us, doing our best to bring glimpses of holiness while wading through the messes we create.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace. Amen.

“The one who has hope lives differently; the one who hopes has been granted the gift of a new life.” – Pope Benedict XVI
